Questi detti si riferiscono al cumulus congestus o al cumulonembo. Queste nubi costituiscono gli stadi finali dello sviluppo verticale di un cumulo. Nelle foto, è stata immortalato lo sviluppo di un cumulo congesto. Queste nubi raramente si formano per il solo effetto del riscaldamento solare, in quanto richiedono anche una notevole instabilità atmosferica. Possono dar luogo a raffiche di vento e ad intensi rovesci temporaleschi.
