EVENT:  Date  /5/1889 -  Date quality:

Type:  Ice avalanches
Description  A great ice boulder – volume of some hundreds cubic meters - fell from a glacieret (or a snow field?) on Grivola peak (3969 m), probably as a consequence of heavy rains on the glacier.
Effects:  The falling boulder swept away trees, and stopped close the church of Valsavarenche village, without damaging it.
Deaths(#)  0
Injuried (#)  0
Note  On the southern flank of Grivola there are not glaciers (Valsavarenche), but Belleface glacier covered the northern flank (Cogne) till the boundary ridge with Valsavarenche, at that time. Probably the ice boulder should be detached from there.
