Description  The Vernagt glacier is one of the biggest glaciers in Austria. It is the best documented glacier of Austria because of ist several catastrophic glacierlake outbursts in the past. In the periods around 1600, 1680, 1770 and 1845/48 the glacier was surging several times and reached the Rofen valley were it dammed up the Rofen river. The last big outburst happened on 13th of June 1848

Description  The Vernagt glacier is one of the biggest glaciers in Austria. It is the best documented glacier of Austria because of ist several catastrophic glacierlake outbursts in the past. In the periods around 1600, 1680, 1770 and 1845/48 the glacier was surging several times and reached the Rofen valley were it dammed up the Rofen river. During the glacier advance of 1850 the tongue reached the Rofen valley in June 1845 and the lake started to grow again. Several smaller outburts followed. Up to 28th of May 1847 the lake has reached a size of 1210*260 meters (depth of 85 meters) and then broke out.
Effects:  devastation in the whole Ötztal valley.

Description  The Vernagt glacier is one of the biggest glaciers in Austria. It is the best documented glacier of Austria because of ist several catastrophic glacierlake outbursts in the past. In the periods around 1600, 1680, 1770 and 1845/48 the glacier was surging several times and reached the Rofen valley were it dammed up the Rofen river. In 1678 two outbursts happened with catastrophic damages from 16th to 17th of July.

Description  The Vernagt glacier is one of the biggest glaciers in Austria. It is the best documented glacier of Austria because of ist several catastrophic glacierlake outbursts in the past. In the periods around 1600, 1680, 1770 and 1845/48 the glacier was surging several times and reached the Rofen valley were it dammed up the Rofen river. In the first period in 1599 and 1600 the first ice damm built up an broke through on 20th of July 1600.
