PLATEAU ROSA (LIMH) OBSERVING ALPINE WEATHER AT
3488 M IN THE ALPS, BEING CLOSED
Plateau Rosa is a synoptic
meteorological station of the Italian Weather Service, operating since 1953 at an
elevation of 3488 m, near Matterhorn, on the border between Italy and Switzerland. Due to
its altitude this is one of the most important stations in Europe, both for synoptic
meteorology and for climatological research, as global warming studies and glaciological
applications. This represents the only high-mountain time series in the southern slope of
the Alps.
Recently, logistic and building problems
caused the interruption of activity by the permanent personnel. We think that this kind of
problems could be solved with little local efforts compared with the relevance of the
service performed.
