Abstract

Orco valley and the south Gran Paradiso ridge, from the Punta Cialma, 1th February 2004

28 Apr 2004 - This mountainous region (max altitude 4061 m) in the Italian side of western Alps is about 1500 km2 wide, extending from glaciers to the Po plain. In this area many meteorological observations and glaciers surveys are available since end of 1800, and they were never studied and published on a systematic basis.

In this work we will analyze temperature, precipitation and snow cover daily data, ancient chronicles concerning floods and avalanches, glacier variations obtained by recent direct survey and ancient pictures comparisons.

A data base with monthly data will be soon available on this webpage and a complete book will be printed within the first months of 2005 and distributed free of charge to the schools of the region.

This research, started in 1986 with the support of AEM (Turin electric board), is now supported by
Fondazione Vodafone Italia.
